Smith was sent to Colorado in 1864 by the Noble Gold Mining Company, a group of Boston investors, to examine and report on certain mining properties in and around Central City. There he became editor of the Miner's Register, a journal on mineral resources in Colorado. From 1874 to 1879 he was superintendent of the American and Slide mines for American Gold and Silver Mining Company. Smith was appointed Colorado State Geologist in 1879.
